The Matrix Biology Institute is a key resource for HYLACO, LLC.

The Matrix Biology Institute (MBI) was founded in 1982 by Endre A. Balazs, M.D. and Janet L. Denlinger, Ph.D. At that time both of them were members of the faculty of the Eye Research Department at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University of New York. Endre Balazs, Professor Emeritus of Columbia University of New York is the Chief Scientific Officer and Chair of the board of MBI, and Janet Denlinger is the President.

The objective of MBI is to carry out research on the structure, function and therapeutic use of hyaluronan, one of the molecular building blocks of the intercellular matrix. Since its inception, MBI has carried out and supported research projects on the biological function of the intercellular matrix (biomatrix). The results of this research are published in international research journals.

General Purposes:

  • Conduct, provide and support scientific and medical research in the interest of the general public, making the results of such research available to the public

  • Advance knowledge that leads to the better understanding of the molecular structure, function, and therapeutic and skin care applications of hyaluronan and its derivatives.

  • Establish and operate research laboratories to pursue the above objectives.

  • Educate and train scientists and specialists in the field of biomedical research and matrix engineering.

  • Facilitate means of communication between scientists and specialists in various fields of science and medicine.

  • Establish, collect and maintain publications and other documents related to the research and therapeutic use of hyaluronan and its derivatives, and make this collection available to qualified individuals.

  • Apply for grants, donations and other financial aids from federal, state or private organizations and individuals.
